Do you know the things that represent France ?

In the previous post, we have already spoken about the Eiffel Tower which dominates the "Champs de Mars". But, what is your knowledge of other national symbols ?

  1. The French flag 🏳️

We also call it a tricolore flag because it has three colours on it : which ones..?

Blue, white and red of course !

The three colours stand for:

  • blue and red: the colours of Paris city

  • white: the colour of the monarchy when France had one

This flag was adopted after the French Revolution (1789) and has not changed since.

2. La Marseillaise 🎵

Allons enfants de la Patrie ! That is how our anthem starts, it means: " Go, children of homeland ! "

Rouget de Lisle wrote that song in 1792, during times of the Revolution and that is why it is a patriotic song. From the status of song it became our national anthem !

3. Le 14 juillet

July 14th is a bank holiday as it is the celebration of our national day: on this occasion, there are many events like fireworks and parades. You can also listen to music in the streets and dance.

We celebrate the storming of the Bastille in 1789 by the revolutionaries. The Bastille was a prison and destroying it represented an attack on the monarchy. When it was taken, the revolutionaries took the power.
